The Day of the Beast (1995)
O Unholy Night
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
I sadly missed Álex de la Iglesia's El día de la bestia (The Day of the Beast) when it was released in San Francisco in 1999, and it has been difficult to see ever since. I finally found it on Tubi in 2020. It's described as a horror movie, but it's more of a black comedy. A priest, Father Ángel Berriartúa (Álex Angulo), suddenly decides to start committing sins, some of which are rather hilarious/pathetic. It's revealed that he wants to sell his soul to the devil so that he can kill the Antichrist, which is scheduled to appear at midnight on Christmas Eve. Aided by a heavy metal-loving so-called Satanist (Santiago Segura) and the host of a TV show about the occult (Armando De Razza), they go on a crazy quest to find all the pieces of the puzzle and save the world. It's neither as scary, as edgy, nor as Christmasey as I was hoping, but it's still entertaining, like a goofy drawing-room comedy about demons and devils.
