'Double Indemnity' Redux
By Jeffrey M. Anderson At the behest of star Peter Falk, John Cassavetes took over the direction of this film from Andrew Bergman (who remains credited as screenwriter under the nom de plume "Warren Bogle"). It turned out to be Cassavetes' last film before he succumbed to cancer in 1989. Most people hate it, but it's a pretty decent comedy, based loosely on Double Indemnity that benefits from both Cassavetes' loose direction and Bergman's snappy dialogue. The uniformly excellent cast includes Alan Arkin, Beverly D'Angelo, Charles Durning and Robert Stack.
