Preston Sturges wrote the screenplay for this charming Christmas film, starring Barbara Stanwyck as a pickpocket named Lee who gets caught just before Christmas. Fred MacMurray plays the district attorney who decides to postpone her trial until after the holidays, and so takes her home to pass the time with him. After several mishaps and some surprisingly lovely moments, they fall in love. But there's still the problem of Lee's arrest and looming conviction, which is handled with surprising maturity. The film is just Christmasy enough, and even includes a sweet barn dance New Year's Eve party. Sturges made his directorial debut, The Great McGinty, later the same year, and Stanwyck and MacMurray teamed up again for Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity.
