Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025)
'Mission' Bells
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
The supposed final movie in the Tom Cruise series that began in 1996 is a letdown, especially after the thrilling Part One of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. Running nearly three hours, it begins with an hour of flashbacks and recap before it gets on with Ethan Hunt's mission to stop the evil, renegade AI called "The Entity." There's a ton of exposition, and, eventually, some great stunts and set-pieces, including an incredible fight with villainous Gabriel (Esai Morales) on a pair of biplanes (although I liked it less than the train stunt from the last movie). I also enjoyed revisiting a minor character (Rolf Saxon) from the original film, building a fascinating arc. Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Pom Klementieff also star. The Final Reckoning made a ton of money, so I'm sure they'll drag director Christopher McQuarrie and poor Cruise out for more. Imagine if this series had ended on a high note like Mission: Impossible – Fallout?
Paramount's three-disc 4K and Blu-ray combo release features a spectacular Dolby Atmos audio track. McQuarrie & Cruise provide a commentary track, and McQuarrie, editor Eddie Hamilton, and first assistant director Mary Boulding provide a second one. There's also an isolated score, and Spanish and French language tracks. Many subtitle options exist. The 4K and digital versions include many short behind-the-scenes featurettes and deleted scenes, which are included on a second Blu-ray.
