Coup de Race

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

"Formula" is right. This fun summer blockbuster follows the usual dots, but still manages to paint some compelling situations. It also has some very cool racing scenes. It was expected to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Editing (as many race car movies do), and it's no surprised that it was also nominated for Sound and FX, but it was somehow nominated for Best Picture too. Brad Pitt plays "Sonny Hayes," a comfortably familiar character; he's scrappy and unorthodox (he sleeps in a trailer), but he's one of the all-time best behind the wheel. (Pitt is effortlessly likable in the role.) His career came to an end years back after a crash, and now Rubén Cervantes (Javier Bardem) tries to recruit him for his new team. His teammate is the hotheaded rookie Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), and the two immediately clash. Kerry Condon plays technical director Kate McKenna who becomes a romantic interest for Sonny. There are also some scheming bad guys. The movie's absurdly long running time allows the story to stretch out a bit, and it does manage to do some surprising and interesting things with its setup. Director Joseph Kosinski also gave us the blockbuster (and Oscar-nominated) Top Gun: Maverick.
