The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie (2025)

3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Duck Loopy

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Astonishingly, the notes say that this is the first full-length, theatrically released Looney Tunes movie consisting of entirely new material. What took them so long? Departing from the traditional look of the classic 1950s shorts, this hand-drawn film looks absolutely spectacular, slick and springy, smooth and kinetic, with no end of humorously imaginative visuals. In it, Porky and Daffy (both voiced by Eric Bauza) were taken in and raised by a kindly farmer and taught to always stick together. Later, the farmer is gone, and they have allowed the farm house to fall into ruin, forcing them to get jobs. Meanwhile, an alien (voiced by Peter MacNicol) has begun taking over the world by turning people into zombies via chewing gum. Porky gets to have a little romance with Petunia (Candi Milo), a gum inventor at the factory where Porky and Daffy toil. The movie leans a little too heavily into its "stick together" message — it sometimes slows down and loses that old Looney Tunes zany factor — but it's such a great-looking, fast-paced movie, that it's forgivable.
