Alien Boys

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Yorgos Lanthimos rounds up his usual cast for another dose of acclaimed weirdness. Jesse Plemons plays Teddy, a conspiracy theory nut who spends his time following self-imposed rules while preparing for something bad to happen. He has also dragged his cousin Don (Aidan Delbis, who in real life is on the autism spectrum) into his mini-cult. He becomes convinced that Michelle Fuller (Emma Stone), a powerful CEO of a drug company, is really an alien. He cooks up a scheme to kidnap her and force her to speak to her leader and call off an upcoming invasion. Most of the suspense of the movie comes from pondering the earth-shattering question: "is Emma really an alien or not?" In the end it feels like it doesn't really matter, but it gives Lanthimos an opportunity to focus on elaborate sets and bizarre makeup and hairstyles. It's a remake of a Korean film, Save the Green Planet!, which I didn't care much for either.
