Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)

3 Stars (out of 4)

Flair Game

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

After the horror that was Dungeons and Dragons (2000), I was not looking forward to this new attempt, but I'm glad I caught up to it. It captures just the right blend of humor, thrills, fantasy, and lovable characters, and brisk storytelling, approximating the fun of a bunch of good pals playing the game.

Bard Edgin (Chris Pine) and barbarian Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) are arrested after attempting to steal the Tablet of Reawakening, with which Edgin hopes to resurrect his dead wife, and the mother of his daughter, Kira (Chloe Coleman). While imprisoned, Kira lives with the fast-talking con artist Forge (Hugh Grant), who has become very powerful through his association with an evil witch, Sofina (Daisy Head). Sofina was once partnered with Edgin and Holga, and engineered the betrayal that sent them to prison.

Breaking out, Edgin and Holga assemble a team that includes sorcerer Simon (Justice Smith) and druid Doric (Sophia Lillis). They decide to break into Forge's vault and get the Tablet, but first they must find the Helm of Disjunction to disrupt the magic that seals the vault. Co-directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who co-wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming and co-directed Game Night, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves strikes a good balance of challenges and setbacks, all leading up to a nice finale. Bradley Cooper has a funny small role as a little guy who has a thing for barbarian women.

Paramount's Blu-ray release is of top-of-the-line quality, with only a few fairy generic extras: three featurettes, "From Dice to Dragons: Honoring the Lore" (11 mins.), "Rogues' Gallery: The Heroes of Dungeons & Dragons" (11 mins.), and "Broadswords, Battleaxes & Badass Brawls" (9 mins.), plus a gag reel and about 10 minutes of deleted and extended scenes.
