Masters of Horror: Dance of the Dead (2005)

No Fuss, No Muss

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Based on a 1954 short story by the late, great Richard Matheson — and adapted by his son Richard Christian Matheson — this Tobe Hooper-directed episode of the "Masters of Horror" series is, for the most part, a disappointment. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic dystopia, where Peggy (Jessica Lowndes) works in a lonely diner with her mom (Marilyn Norry), her father and sister lost to some nasty biological weapon. Three punks — who have been stealing blood to sell — visit the diner, and the naive teen is drawn to the bad-boy Jak (Jonathan Tucker). He coaxes her to sneak out, and they go to the Doom Room, a club where patrons watch zombie-like beings "dance." A scene-stealing Robert Englund is the MC there. There's kind of a twist ending, but this one feels a bit long, and Hooper unfortunately decided on a strange, twitchy visual style that is just headache-inducing. And while Lowndes is certainly beautiful, she somehow performs the entire thing with her mouth hanging open. Billy Corgan of the band Smashing Pumpkins provided the score.
