3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Self Conscious

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

This ephemeral wisp of a movie is almost like a dream, not that is uses dream logic, but in the way that it's so delicately beautiful that it feels like it could just waft away. Eight-year-old Nelly (Joséphine Sanz) accompanies her mother (Nina Meurisse) and father (Stéphane Varupenne) to her grandmother's house. Her grandmother has passed away, and the family now must face the task of cleaning out her house. Nelly plays with a toy that breaks, sending a ball flying into the woods. She goes exploring and finds another young girl, Marion (Gabrielle Sanz), building a fort. They begin forming a sweet little friendship, and secrets begin to emerge. Written and directed by Céline Sciamma, Petit Maman is a simple, beautiful ode to loss and generational relationships.
