Getting 'Gas'

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Allison Anders' coming-of-age tale, based on a novel by Richard Peck, occasionally veers into overt melodrama and silly plot turns, but the down-to-earth quality and the earnest performances by Ione Skye and Fairuza Balk as small town sisters ground the film. Balk narrates plays the more responsible younger sister with a crush on a Olivia Newton-John loving weirdo, while Skye plays the town slut who falls for a geologist. Brooke Adams gives an underappreciated turn as the girls' frustrated mother. The 2004 DVD release includes trailers for Big Girls Don't Cry, The Craft (another film with Balk), The Last Picture Show and Cruel Intentions, but no trailer for the film in question.
