Armpit of Despair

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

David Cronenberg's underrated second film continues to develop his theme of body manipulation. After a motorcycle crash, a woman (Marilyn Chambers) is whisked away to a nearby plastic surgery center for an emergency operation. When she recovers, she develops a weird vampire-like growth under her armpit that feeds on human blood.

Cronenberg made the film using Canadian government money and caused a small scandal with the results. It didn't help that this was Chambers' first mainstream film after her porno career (Behind the Green Door). (Cronenberg originally wanted Sissy Spacek.)

Somerville House has re-released this film on DVD in a new Special Edition, complete with a Cronenberg commentary track, an optional French language track, a photo gallery, production notes, biographies, trailers and a new Cronenberg interview.
