Basket Case (1982)

4 Stars (out of 4)

Oh, Brother

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

One of the last of the great New York City grindhouse classics, this extraordinary low-budget film follows Duane (Kevin Van Hentenryck) who carries his wicker basket containing his monstrous Siamese twin brother, Belial, wherever he goes. Together they're out to kill all the doctors who cut them apart. Trouble begins when Duane meets a pretty doctor's assistant (Terri Susan Smith), arousing Belial's jealousy. Director Frank Henelotter gives a real NYC feel and a wonderful dark sense of humor to compliment the blood and screams. Believe it or not, Basket Case actually had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. A sequel followed in 1990.

Basket Case looks and sounds better than ever before on Image Entertainment and Something Weird's new Special Edition DVD. Extras include a director commentary track, trailers and TV spots, outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage, a video short, art and posters, radio spots, radio interviews with actress Terri Susan Smith, and clips from "Beverly Bonner's Laugh Track." In 2011, Image Entertainment released this same package on a glorious Blu-Ray!
