End of Summer

Maybe director Akira Kurosawa was impressed by Hollywood star Richard Gere's Zen philosophy when the two got together for this late, minor work from the great Japanese director. The movie is mostly about an old woman (Sachiko Murase) and her various grandchildren, and Gere (playing her half-Japanese nephew) comes to visit midway through the film. It has some sad, lovely moments, and Gere actually manages not to stick out too badly…
