Adapted from a novel by Naomi Fontaine, this young adult story focuses on two Innu women, Mikuan (Sharon Ishpatao Fontaine) and Shaniss (Yamie Grégoire), who have been friends forever, but whose relationship is tested as they begin to move their separate ways. Shaniss is stuck in an abusive relationship with little hope for the future, while Mikuan finds a tender romance outside her tribe, with a white boy. I found the storytelling a bit conventional, but I was definitely on board for seeing this community, and women of a certain body type, depicted as three-dimensional figures.
