A Report from SFIFF

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: This sturdy collection of nine above-average cartoons, totaling 66 minutes, is largely suitable for kids of all ages, though the longest one, Saint Feast Day from France, may be teeter a bit too far into suggested violence and gore. (An ogre prepares to eat a child for an annual holiday, but accidentally knocks out all his teeth.) When I Grow Up, rendered by 12 radically different artists, is quite moving, as is Montrose Avenue. The amusing claymation Still Life revisits the Shaun the Sheep character from Nick Park's A Close Shave (1995), though with a different director. My Happy End and The Librarian from the Black Lagoon are very funny, and The Goat That Ate Time manages a lovely, wistful, yet wry tone. Only Abridged seems like a Pixar-style knockoff, and Alien for Christmas was unavailable for review at press time.
