Falling Slowly

This lovely, small-scale musical made big waves for the way it combined open-hearted music and a realistic setting. A vacuum repairman (Glen Hansard) and street musician meets a lovely immigrant (Marketa Irglova) and discover they have a musical rapport. The reality of Dublin keeps their story grounded, however; no one breaks into song for no reason, and things do not necessarily work out for the best. It cost a little over $200,000 in U.S. dollars, and ended up grossing more than $9 million. The heartbreaking tune "Falling Slowly" won an Oscar.
