Sexy Beast (2001)

Rating: 3 Stars (out of 4)

'Beast' of Burden

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Buy Sexy Beast on DVD.

A retired gangster (Ray Winstone) living in a Spanish villa receives a visit by the sinister, charismatic Don (Ben Kingsley), insisting he come back to England for "one last big job." Though this sounds like a creaky, decades-old plot, Sexy Beast, directed by Jonathan Glazer, splashes new life into it. Literally, it turns out, when a runaway boulder nearly squashes Winstone and lands in his swimming pool in the film's first few minutes. An astonishing underwater robbery scene highlights this amazingly staged and acted film. A must-see.

Starring: Ray Winstone, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Amanda Redman, Cavan Kendall, Julianne White, Alvaro Monje, James Fox
Written by: Louis Mellis, David Scinto
Directed by: Jonathan Glazer
MPAA Rating: R for pervasive language, strong violence and some sexuality
Running Time: 88 minutes
Date: July 14, 2001
