Sally Potter (Orlando and The Tango Lesson) directs this wonderfully restrained look at a Jewish immigrant singer (Christina Ricci) raised in England and working in a Paris opera. The film brings grace and balance to the traditional Holocaust story, forgoing any of the usual horror show. Ricci brings a delightful gravity to her character, who falls for a Gypsy horseman (Johnny Depp), another outcast. Potter makes beautiful use of music, including a knowledge of when not to use it, a skill most filmmakers do no possess. John Turturro, Cate Blanchett, and Harry Dean Stanton also star.
