15 Minutes (2001)

Rating: 2 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Fame Over

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Buy 15 Minutes on DVD

Director John Herzfeld (2 Days in the Valley) attempts to say something ironic about Andy Warhol's "15 minutes of fame" that everyone gets, but the result is more than a little obvious. Two Russian criminals (Karel Roden and Oleg Taktarov), newly arrived in New York City begin a murder spree; one killing and the other videotaping. Their plan is to plead insane, get themselves on some talk shows (like the one run by sleazy talk show host Kelsey Grammer), and go free. Fortunately, Detective Eddie Flemming (Robert De Niro) and arson investigator Jordy Warsaw (Edward Burns) are on the case. Many scenes don't make sense and many other scenes are telegraphed pretty far in advance. Eddie tries to propose to his girl (Melina Kanakaredes) but gets interrupted. Wouldn't it be a huge tragedy if he were to say... I don't know... die before he could ever see her again? Nevertheless, the movie gets the blood boiling and De Niro is lively enough to carry the picture by himself.

Starring: Robert De Niro, Edward Burns, Kelsey Grammer, Avery Brooks, Melina Kanakaredes, Karel Roden, Oleg Taktarov, Vera Farmiga, John DiResta, James Handy, Darius McCrary, Bruce Cutler, Charlize Theron, Kim Cattrall, David Alan Grier, Anton Yelchin
Written by: John Herzfeld
Directed by: John Herzfeld
MPAA Rating: R for strong violence, language and some sexuality
