This is a game even more dubious than ranking individual films. How do
you rank one career against another? Take the number one spot. Do I rank
Orson Welles at number one, who has made greater achievements than Hitchcock?
Or do I rank Hitchcock at number one, whose sheer output outnumbered Welles'
about four to one? Keaton may be the greatest filmmaker of them all,
but his career was sadly cut short when sound came in. This was not his
fault, but his output simply isn't there. And so on. I hope my list inspires
you to look at some of these movies by these great filmmakers, or to make
up a list of your own. [Note: This is an updated, 2008 version of a list I made some years back.
For the morbidly curious, I'm currently working on the list for #61 to #100, as seen here, though
in alphabetical order and ongoing.
