Future World

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Director Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) returned to this film series and delivered arguably the best entry featuring the original crew. Going back to his own earlier success, The Seven Per-Cent Solution, he incorporated a little Sherlock Holmes into this story of a peace conference gone wrong. Just after an uneasy dinner between humans and Klingons, the unsuspecting Klingon ship is fired upon, killing the Klingon chancellor. Kirk (William Shatner) and Dr.McCoy (DeForest Kelley) are arrested and sent to a mining planet, while Spock (Leonard Nimoy) tries to solve the mystery, Holmes-style.

Kim Catrrall, Christopher Plummer and the model Iman also star. Meyer's direction and dialogue are among the most fluid and exciting of the whole series, and he manages a lovely "final" feel, saying goodbye to the old crew and embracing the future at the same time.

Paramount's wonderful double-disc set comes with a "revised director's cut" (2 scene revisions, a commentary track by Meyer and writer Denny Martin Flynn, and a lovely tribute to the late DeForest Kelly.
