Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Whale Order

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home alienated a few die-hard fans with its obligatory "save the whales" message, but I adore this Leonard Nimoy-directed time-travel story with the crew of the Enterprise cooling their heels in good ol' 1986 San Francisco. It's kind of hard to remember how much we hated the Russians at the time and just why Chekov (Walter Koenig) would be in so much trouble getting caught aboard an American aircraft carrier. Yet it's still great fun and still one of the warmest and lightest of the Star Trek entries.

Funny scenes include Chekov and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) standing on a street corner and trying to find out where the "nuclear wessels" are kept, and Spock (Nimoy) trying to learn 20th century slang. Catherine Hicks co-stars as a 20th century love interest for Captain Kirk. Paramount has given the film the 2-disc DVD Special Edition treatment with all kinds of good stuff, including a scientific breakdown on the possibility of real-life time travel.
