Written by Aaron Sorkin, "Sports Night" probably turned off most audiences with its quick, snappy banter and its minimal laugh track. And, though it was billed as a comedy, "Sports Night" could effortlessly evoke tears with its beautifully played poignancy. After devouring all 45 episodes in this new box set in less than a week, it lands firmly on my list of the greatest shows of all time. How could it not with a brilliant supporting turn by William H. Macy as ratings expert Sam Donovan? Additional kudos to Josh Charles, Peter Krause, Felicity Huffman, Joshua Malina, Sabrina Lloyd and Robert Guillaume for their lethal acting chops. Unfortunately, the six-disc box set contains no extras.
