The Powerpuff Girls: The Complete First Season (1998)

Rating: 3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Sugar, Spice, Everything Nice... and Chemical X

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Buy The Powerpuff Girls: The Complete First Season on DVD

Craig McCracken's cartoon series, which crams two cartoons into each half-hour time slot, moves with crackling speed, clean lines and bold colors -- not to mention its clackety-clack drum score. Sometimes you're so dazzled that you forget how funny it is. "The Powerpuff Girls" emerged onto a scene already populated by welcome strong female characters ("Xena," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," etc.), and they straddled an ironic line between cute and tough, between "Smurfs" and "Superman." Blossom (voiced by Cathy Cavadini), Buttercup (voiced by Elizabeth Daily), and Bubbles (voiced by Tara Strong) battle an amazingly imaginative rogue's gallery of bad guys -- although the most persistent has to be Mojo Jojo -- all before bedtime. Tom Kenny, who went on to fame as the voice of Spongebob Squarepants, voices the Mayor of Townsville as well as the narrator.

DVD Details: Warner Home Video has released a two-disc set with 13 episodes, and lots of behind-the-scenes goodies, including early "Powerpuff" experiments.
