Date with an Angel (1987)

2 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

That Wing You Do

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

One of the most achingly beautiful women in the world, it's clear why the French-born Emmanuelle Béart (La Belle Noiseuse, Mission: Impossible) was cast in Date with an Angel (1987, Anchor Bay Entertainment, $14.98) a 1980s romantic comedy by Tom McLoughlin. In the film, she plays an angel who doesn't speak a word until the last scene, thereby avoiding the need for her to speak English. She crash-lands in Michael E. Knight's swimming pool and he must nurse her back to health, all the while avoiding his jealous fiancée (Phoebe Cates). It's pretty sappy overall, but it contains some surprisingly inventive moments, and Beart will take your breath away each time she's on screen. Date with an Angel comes in a letterboxed transfer, but despite the usual high quality from Anchor Bay, the picture seems grainy.
