Robert Redford stars in his usual quiet heroic role as a liberal reform prison warden who first appears as a prisoner to get a lay of the land. He attempts to rid the prison of its barbaric tactics, and eventually tries to uncover an ancient murder rap, but the odds are against him. It's a heavy-handed message movie with an intolerable ending, but it contains many great performances, notably from Morgan Freeman as a half-crazed solitary prisoner.
