Bottoms Up (2006)

Rating: 1 Star (out of 4)

Scraping 'Bottoms'

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Buy Bottoms Up on DVD

I have a lot of admiration for a low-budget "B" movie producer canny enough to offer movie roles to two of the least talented people in Hollywood, Paris Hilton and Jason Mewes (otherwise known as "Jay" in the Kevin Smith movies), but who still have enough selling power to get a movie made. But from there, they messed it up. Director and co-writer Erik MacArthur actually casts Mewes as the straight man -- a massive mistake, given that his talent is for clowning and not acting. He plays a bartender who journeys to Hollywood, hoping to win a contest and make enough money to save his father's bar. Once there, he crashes with his gay uncle (David Keith) and meets starlet Lisa Mancini (Hilton). Hilton is a hottie, but why on earth did they dye her hair dark? Along with the bad casting and asking these limited actors to do more than they're capable of, MacArthur's clumsy skills as a filmmaker send the rest of the package to an early grave. For some reason, Kevin Smith agreed to a cameo.
