The great Otto Preminger took on this beautiful, full-color Cinemascope Western merely for the paycheck, but it turns out to be one of his most breathtaking and accomplished films. Robert Mitchum stars as a simple farmer and a single father who meets saloon singer Monroe. She's about to run off with the wrong guy (Rory Calhoun) but circumstances force her to travel up river with Mitchum, fighting like cats and dogs until they finally fall in love. It's an awfully creaky story but the superb performances and Preminger's amazing use of widescreen make it a must-see.
