National Lampoon's Animal House (1978)

Rating: 3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Fat, Drunk and Stupid

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Buy National Lampoon's Animal House on DVD

The original Saturday Night Live crew accounted for some of the funniest movies of their day. National Lampoon's Animal House (1978, Universal, $19.98) is now available in a "Double Secret Probation Special Edition." John Belushi leads a great ensemble cast and gives a delightfully physical performance, using gestures and expressions to make us laugh -- especially when visiting the girls' dormitory via a tall ladder. Fortunately, almost everyone else has at least one funny scene to equal Belushi's greatest moments. Some of the special features on the disc revisit the surviving cast members today.

Starring: John Belushi, Tim Matheson, John Vernon, Verna Bloom, Tom Hulce, Cesare Danova, Peter Riegert, Mary Louise Weller, Stephen Furst, James Daughton, Bruce McGill, Mark Metcalf, DeWayne Jessie, Karen Allen, James Widdoes
Written by: Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney, Chris Miller
Directed by: John Landis
MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 109 minutes
Date: November 16, 2003
