The Elephant Man was David Lynch's second major film after his midnight hit Eraserhead and he managed a certain amount of acclaim for his subtle, powerful portrait of John Merrick (played by John Hurt) a man so deformed he was raised as a circus freak. The English cast (including Anthony Hopkins, John Gielgud and Wendy Hiller) and the true-story appeal probably turned most critics on. But this black-and-white film already includes several Lyncian benchmarks: hissing noises, nightmare sequences, and moments of deadly quiet. Oddly, Mel Brooks's production company was in charge.

DVD Details: Paramount's beautiful widescreen DVD includes a very good "Making Of" documentary and a photo gallery.
