Drunken Master (1978)

3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Slam Drunk

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Columbia/TriStar has released an early Jackie Chan gem, Drunken Master (1978), directed by Yuen Woo-ping. Though I prefer the sequel, Drunken Master II (butchered by New Line and turned into The Legend of Drunken Master), this letterboxed, subtitled DVD comes highly recommended. Like special effects, kung fu grows more spectacular with time, and the 20 year-old antics in this film will seem slow and quaint to most viewers. But witnessing a young and vibrant Jackie Chan makes the film worthwhile, as well as the excellent commentary track by Hong Kong experts Ric Meyers and Jeff Yang.
