Bicycle Beef

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Another "David vs. Golitah" story, but with an interesting backdrop. In the small town of Bloomington, Indiana, four friends don't know what to do with themselves after high school. The town is divided into the rich kids who go to college, and the sons of the "Cutters," or the quarry workers, who have no money and not much future. Dave Stohler (Dennis Christopher) develops a passion for bicycle racing and pretends to be Italian, driving his poor father (Paul Dooley) crazy. But Dave's skills come in handy when the big race comes through town. Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern and Jackie Earle Haley (also in all three Bad News Bears films) co-star as Dave's friends. The screenplay by Oscar-winner Steve Tesich sometimes turns a little precious, but the character and atmosphere is so firmly established that it all works out.
