Apache (1954)

3 Stars (out of 4)

Native Son

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

The soft-spoken, intense-eyed Burt Lancaster is not particularly known as a cowboy even though he made more than a dozen Westerns in his career. That's probably because one of his best roles was not as a cowboy, but as an Indian in Apache, Robert Aldrich's colorful and rousing tale of Massai, the last Apache to stand up to the white man (the beautiful Jean Peters co-stars as his squaw). In 2020, Kino Lorber released a sparkling new Blu-ray edition, with trailers and optional English subtitles.
