Salma Hayek turns in a great performance as Mary Carmen in this movie based on a true story. Hayek is matched by her co-stars, Thomas Jane as "Gary" and Vincent D'Onofrio as Valentino, who plays a bisexual porn star in a relationship with both Mary and Gary. The three attempt something of a life together until Valentino contracts AIDS and is hospitalized. As directed by Dan Ireland (The Whole Wide World), The Velocity of Gary has rough spots but rings emotionally true and paints a vivid picture of New York City's underbelly. Ethan Hawke also appears as a tattoo artist.
