Prancer (1989)

3 Stars (out of 4)

Deer Friends

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

MGM has just released its 1989 holiday melodrama Prancer on DVD in time for Christmas. It's a surprisingly gritty story of a poor girl (Rebecca Harrell) who lives on a farm with her widower father Sam Elliot. When she finds a wounded reindeer in the woods, she believes it's Prancer and schemes to heal him and get him back to Santa before Christmas Eve. Directed by John Hancock (Bang the Drum Slowly), the film stays rooted in grim reality and avoids sticky sentiment or fairy dust until the final moment, when it's absolutely earned.
