Little Dieter Needs to Fly (1997)

The 'Fly' Papers

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Werner Herzog and Dieter Dengler were both Germans living in Marin County, so it was only natural that they would meet and combine forces for this powerful documentary. Dengler recounts his amazing life story -- joining the Navy and surviving six months in a horrifying Vietnamese prison camp -- all because he wanted to fly. Dengler is a marvelous storyteller and opens his life and soul for Herzog without hesitation (he shows us the giant windows on his Mount Tamalpias home which help him avoid feeling trapped). Sadly, Dengler died in February of 2001 and the DVD comes with a few minutes of footage of his funeral.

DVD Details: In 2007, Anchor Bay re-released their 2002 DVD in anticipation of Herzog's upcoming feature film Rescue Dawn, which was inspired by Little Dieter. It has a new cover with a Rescue Dawn sticker, but other than that, it appears that there are no changes from the original release.
