Clint Eastwood: 35 Films 35 Years at Warner Bros. (2010)

A Day-Maker

Warner Home Video has released this awesome 35-film collection on 19 discs, highlighting one of a most impressive relationship between one star and one studio (it retails for about $180). It's far from a complete collection of Eastwood films (some of them belong to other studios), and even this one omits Warner titles like Flags of Our Fathers, but it contains a few masterpieces and many hours of pure entertainment. Eastwood directed 23 of the films, and fans can trace his evolution over the years, with fascinating commentaries on violence, an odd fear of/fascination with women, and a hokey sense of humor that sometimes recalls John Ford. In the past 20 years, his style has evolved into a classically clean, masterful flow, with keen, practiced eye in filling the frame.

The 35th film in the set is a new "featurette," The Eastwood Factor, directed by critic Richard Schickel, though it's only a 20-minute preview for an upcoming feature. Schickel follows Eastwood around some of his old sets and sound stages, and through a wardrobe closet, getting a delightfully warm interview from the legendary icon.
