Ocean's Thirteen (2007)

Rating: 3 Stars (out of 4)

Out with a Bank

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Buy Ocean's Thirteen on DVD

Steven Soderbergh's third entry in his Las Vegas heist series moves even further away from the 1960 Rat Pack original but significantly improves over the self-involved second entry, from 2004. Reuben (Elliot Gould) becomes bed-ridden after getting shafted in a hotel deal with Willy Bank (Al Pacino). So Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and his cohorts (Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Bernie Mac, etc.) cook up a scheme to clean out Bank and ruin his hotel's rating. The sleek script makes gleeful use of expository dialogue, building ludicrous situations and winding its way out again. In-between, Soderbergh capitalizes on the unspoken male bond between his crafty scoundrels, listening in on hilarious, half-snatches of conversation. The luxurious cinematography and cool musical score help smooth things out. See also: Ocean's 11 (1960), Ocean's Eleven (2001) and Ocean's Twelve (2004).

DVD Details: Warner Home Video's DVD looks great, but skimps on the extras. It comes with a 22-minute featurette about Las Vegas (Vegas: An Opulent Illusion), and the 3-minute Jerry Weintraub: Walk and Talk, a tour of the set. There are also five minutes of deleted scenes. Audio comes in English 5.1 and 2.0, plus Spanish and French. Subtitles come in English, English for the Hearing Impaired, French and Spanish.
