Every Which Way But Bruce

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

When Bruce Lee died in 1973, he left behind footage for a partially shot feature that would come to be known as Game of Death. Justin Lin's new comedy starts promisingly by looking at the process of completing that film. Unfortunately, Lin ignores all the facts and goes with a lazy, silly, faux-documentary approach, highlighting a fictional casting session that never results in anything. We get the usual, jokey "audition" sequences, in which naïve hopefuls make fools of themselves. From there, the film follows several disparate "characters," such as a Lee knockoff, Breeze Loo (Roger Fan), a former TV star (Dustin Nguyen), and an up-and-coming amateur (Sung Kang). Lin's feeble jokes don't seem aimed at anything in particular; it's a wasted idea. With James Franco.
