Game 6 (2006)

3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Sox Addict

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Don DeLillo's dreamily vivid Game 6 opens today at the Roxie (3117 16th Street, SF). A playwright, Nicky Rogan (Michael Keaton), ditches his own opening night to watch the Red Sox play the Mets in the deciding game of the 1986 World Series. Directed by Michael Hoffman (A Midsummer Night's Dream), the movie takes place over the course of a single day as Nicky meets with various friends, family and lovers -- forever distracted by the big game and by the threat of a bad review from the notorious theater critic Steven Schwimmer (Robert Downey Jr.). Some might call it overwritten, but Game 6 is enthralled with the sound of its words, even as it loves the deliberate, sensual pace of a well-played (or well-lost) ball game.
