Deliver Us from Evil (2006)

3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Touch of 'Evil'

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Amy Berg's Oscar-nominated documentary tells the story of Catholic priest Father Oliver O'Grady, who, each time he was caught molesting children, was moved by the Church to some other small town. This grim territory was already well covered in films like Kirby Dick's Twist of Faith (2004). But where Deliver Us from Evil succeeds is in its canny psychological profile of the Catholic Church, and how its history feeds into its current psychosis. It's shocking and revealing to hear how the current problem and all its emotional suffering is the result of sheer greed. By getting to the root of the problem, Berg moves beyond a mere exposé and into something more profoundly useful.
