Adam & Steve (2006)

Rating: 2 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Mix and Match

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Buy Adam & Steve on DVD

Craig Chester's gay romantic comedy develops sweet, engaging characters and watches carefully as their relationship builds in an interesting, humorous way. But then the whole thing collapses as Adam & Steve shifts into rom-com overdrive, finding some stupid reason for the characters to fight, break up and then make up for a "thrilling" conclusion. The whole thing starts in flashback in the 1980s as Adam (director Chester), covered in goth makeup, meets glam dancer Steve (Malcolm Gets) with David Lee Roth hair. Their first night together ends in disaster, and when they meet again decades later, they don't recognize one another. A wacky supporting cast (including Parker Posey, Melinda Dillon, Sally Kirkland, Julie Hagerty and an unusually likable Chris Kattan) helps things along.

DVD Details: TLA's DVD comes with a commentary track, a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, a "battle dance" learning video and a gag reel.

Starring: Craig Chester, Malcolm Gets, Parker Posey, Chris Kattan, Sally Kirkland, Julie Hagerty
Written by: Craig Chester
Directed by: Craig Chester
MPAA Rating: R for sexual content, language, drug use and some crude humor
Running Time: 99 minutes
Date: August 19, 2006
