The White Diamond (2005)

4 Stars (out of 4)

My Beautiful Balloon

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

The White Diamond is a documentary depicting the flight of an experimental airship over the rain forests of Guyana. The ever-extreme Herzog hitches a ride, even though the ship could easily go down and kill him. During downtimes, Herzog becomes curious about the people living in the jungle; he finds as much beauty and truth in their simple stories as he does in the Englishman (Dr. Graham Dorrington) who needs to fly. This is one of Herzog's most breathtaking and life-affirming films.

It was released the same year as -- and was overshadowed by -- two other Herzog docs, Grizzly Man and Wheel of Time.
