'Mind' a Terrible Thing Wasted
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Eight hopeful FBI profilers arrive on a secluded island to complete aweekend of training. Unfortunately, a real killer is in their midst andbegins picking them off one by one. Unlike most music video-trainedwannabes, veteran pop-junk director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2,Cliffhanger) brings in a crisp, unpretentious flick. A decent,likeable "B"-list cast -- including Christian Slater, Val Kilmer,Patricia Velasquez, Kathryn Morris, Jonny Lee Miller and LL Cool J --flesh out the rest. But Wayne Kramer and Kevin Brodbin's screenplaydelivers characters so aggravatingly stupid that it's unlikely they'veever even seen an FBI movie, much less actually gone through thetraining. Their every brain-dead move is designed to cover up theimplausible story's beehive of inconsistencies. DVD Details: Miramax/Dimension's new DVD comes with a Renny Harlin commentary track (odd, considering how badly the studio treated his film), a generic making-of featurette, a quickie stunt demonstration and a director's walk through the "crimetown" set, which runs only 3 minutes.
