In Her Shoes (2005)

Rating: 3 Stars (out of 4)

Well Heeled

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Buy In Her Shoes on DVD

It took Curtis Hanson two decades to become an "A" list director (L.A. Confidential, Wonder Boys, 8 Mile) and now he seems determined not to get pinned down, puddle jumping through various genres and leaving a disparate trail of good pictures. Even at 130 minutes, the pastel-colored In Her Shoes is an implausibly sharp, lively Chick Flick. The uptight, Bridget Jones-like Rose (Toni Collette) works in a Philadelphia law office, while her raggedly sexy sister Maggie (Cameron Diaz) constantly makes a mess of things. After a vicious fight, Maggie disappears to Florida, seeking their estranged grandmother (Shirley MacLaine). Hanson and screenwriter Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) give each character -- except the girls' vindictive stepmother -- a true voice and a life breath; the "types" effortlessly jell into people worth caring about. Somehow, both Ridley and Tony Scott are credited as co-producers.

Starring: Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette, Shirley MacLaine, Mark Feuerstein, Brooke Smith, Francine Beers, Richard Burgi, Norman Lloyd, Eric Balfour, Andy Powers, Marcia Jean Kurtz, Anson Mount, Nicole Randall Johnson
Written by: Susannah Grant, based on a novel by Jennifer Weiner
Directed by: Curtis Hanson
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for thematic material, language and some sexual content
Running Time: 130 minutes
Date: October 7, 2005
