Casa de los Babys (2003)

Rating: 3 Stars (out of 4)

Be My Baby

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Buy Casa de los Babys on DVD

Five American women and one Irishwoman hang out at a slightly shady, yet upscale, South American resort looking for quickie adoptions. Stuck for months at a time, they begin to bicker and pick each other apart. Rita Moreno plays the resort's matronly manager who can't stand her own grown children. Other street kids beg and wash car windows for spare change. Writer/director John Sayles manages to intelligently juxtapose the absurdity of these problems while emphasizing the walls we've built to keep ourselves from solving them. Daryl Hannah, Marcia Gay Harden, Mary Steenburgen, Lili Taylor, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Susan Lynch all give strong performances, and each has her own show-stopping scene.

DVD Details: The disc comes with a John Sayles commentary track and a "making-of" featurette.
