Undercover Brother (2002)

Rating: 3 Stars (out of 4)

To and 'Fro

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Buy Undercover Brother on DVD

This second feature by Spike's cousin Malcolm Lee was much funnier and craftier than it had any right to be, and said more about the state of race relations in America today than any ten serious films. Eddie Griffin stars as the title character, a super spy who tries to crack down on an evil plot that "The Man" has launched on black America involving a chain of fried chicken shops that serves drugged goods. Chris Kattan, Denise Richards and Billy Dee Williams all co-star in funny roles. The DVD release from Universal comes with two commentary tracks, deleted scenes and outtakes, music videos -- and best of all -- the original "Undercover Brother" internet cartoons.

Starring: Eddie Griffin, Chris Kattan, Denise Richards, Aunjanue Ellis, Dave Chappelle, Chi McBride, Neil Patrick Harris, Gary Anthony Williams, Billy Dee Williams, Jack Noseworthy, Robert Trumbull, J.D. Hall, James Brown
Written by: John Ridley, Michael McCullers, based on a story by John Ridley
Directed by: Malcolm D. Lee
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for language, sexual humor, drug content and campy violence
Running Time: 87 minutes
Date: March 13, 2003
