Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams (2002)

Rating: 3 Stars (out of 4)

Spy in the Sky

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Following up his enormous hit from last year, writer-director Robert Rodriguez does the impossible -- he makes a big Hollywood sequel into a personal pet project. This time, Carmen (Alexa Vega) and Juni (Daryl Sabara) land on an island of mutated beasties created by a mad scientist (Steve Buscemi), while their concerned parents (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) search for them. Miramax's DVD comes with a terrific "low-budget film school" demonstration that makes it worth buying the whole package. In 2011, Lionsgate released a top-notch new Blu-Ray package. Extras include the aforementioned "film school" featurette, plus a director's commentary track, lost scenes, trailers, and lots of other stuff.
