Dogtown & Z-Boys (2002)

Rating: 3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Skate and Switch

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Buy Dogtown & Z-Boys on DVD.

I know exactly nothing about skateboarding, but this wild, exuberant documentary puts it all in perspective, outlining a crew of 12 surfers-turned-skaters who pioneered the sport -- and, some say, the art form. Directed by the most financially successful of the group, Stacy Peralta, the film features dazzling vintage 1970s footage mixed with current talking head interviews. One quibble: We have no idea how the 12 skaters related to one another on a personal level; we only see them separately trying to out-skate and out-talk one another. Sean Penn narrates.

DVD Details: Columbia/Tristar's DVD comes with a commentary track, deleted scenes, and extra skating footage.

Starring: Sean Penn (narrator), Jay Adams, Tony Alva, Bob Biniak, Paul Constantineau, Shogo Kubo, Jim Muir, Peggy Oki, Stacy Peralta, Nathan Pratt, Wentzle Rumi, Allen Sarlo
Written by: Stacy Peralta, Craig Stecyk
Directed by: Stacy Peralta
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 91 minutes
Date: August 22, 2002
